The Firm

As part of our continued growth, we are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Head of Commercial Law to lead and develop our Commercial Law Department.

The Role

As Head of the Commercial Law Department, you will have overall responsibility for leading the team, managing and developing client relationships, and driving the strategic growth of the department. You will advise on a broad range of commercial matters while ensuring the delivery of pragmatic, high-quality legal solutions aligned with clients’ business objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of commercial solicitors and support staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing department.
  • Client Advisory Work: Advise clients on a wide range of commercial matters, including contracts, terms and conditions, supply and distribution agreements, outsourcing, joint ventures, and regulatory issues.
  • Department Strategy: Develop and implement the strategic direction of the Commercial Law Department, supporting the firm’s overall business objectives.
  • Case and Risk Management: Oversee complex and high-value matters, ensuring quality control, compliance, and effective risk management.
  • Business Development: Drive growth through networking, client relationship management, cross-referrals, and identifying new commercial opportunities.
  • Training and Development: Ensure the team remains up to date with legal and regulatory developments, providing guidance and training on technical and practical issues.
  • Marketing and Profile Raising: Act as an ambassador for the firm by contributing to marketing initiatives, thought leadership, and external events.

Key Requirements

  • Experience: A qualified solicitor with a minimum of 3 years’ (PQE) in Commercial Law, with proven experience handling complex commercial matters.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of commercial contracts and related areas, with the ability to deliver clear, commercially focused advice.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrable experience leading, managing, and developing legal teams.
  • Commercial Awareness: A strong understanding of business needs and the ability to align legal advice with commercial objectives.
  • Business Development: A proactive and strategic approach to growing client relationships and departmental revenues.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Problem Solving: A practical, solutions-focused mindset with strong analytical skills.
